Global warming and climate change is big in the news at present, and calls for a more sustainable way of living are being directed at consumers at every level. It has become common practice to recycle household waste, sorting through cans, bottles, plastic and paper. Not as common, but eagerly encouraged is collecting organic waste to feed the compost bin, which in turn feeds the vegetables growing in the garden to complete a small sustainable cycle.

These are small, simple things that each of us can choose to do, but sometimes the move towards a more sustainable and eco friendly way of life is out of our control. It is time to convince the manufacturers and suppliers of everyday gadgets and gizmos that they too should be adopting a greener approach to their industry. This will give the consumer the power to choose to purchase from an ethically minded business, bolstering the correct attitude towards green consumerism.

Of course, some would say that we should be doing without certain products altogether if the thought of climate change is so worrying. The truth of the fact is it is difficult to change the attitudes of the masses by being puritanical. If the lads and lassies still want their gadgets, then let them play, but give them opportunity to buy eco friendly versions of energy hungry ‘toys’. Solar power, wind power, wind-up power and kinetic charging are all ways that everyday products we have can become Eco Friendly.

One of the more exciting products to have had a trial is the kinetic mobile phone charger developed by Orange. Through a contraption that has internal weights and pullies that is strapped to your arm, a charge is generated while you dance, walk or run. Initially tested on the grooving masses at Glastonbury, it is hoped that this technology will be a success and become available to the general public. Imagine never needing to find a plug for your charger again, and the possibilities of getting super fit because you need to make a phone call!

A favourite of festival goers, campers, and those who like to escape the confines of city life, wind-up radios and torches have been on the scene for many years now. The dynamo system was originally designed to power radios in South Africa, to enable poor communities to have access to radio even without access to batteries. This technology is also ideal for emergency situations where sources of power are not available; and for equipping places that are visited infrequently, such as holiday homes or log cabins.

When it comes to solar power, it’s shocking how long we’ve been living with the technology and probably barely noticed. The common calculator has been using the sun to charge its energy cells for years. The technology has progressed to the point where a company has manufactured a solar charger for laptop computers, compact enough to carry wherever you go just to make sure you never miss another email! Solar energy is also being used in garden trinkets, such as outdoor fairy lights and garden lanterns.

Harnessing the energy of the wind is generally considered for use on a large scale, along with tidal power. Of course, if thousands of units of energy are needed to power all the energy consumption of a house, a turbine is needed, but smaller options are available to power a gadget ******. Compact 24 volt wind generators are available to charge a leisure battery, the energy from which can be used just like the juice that comes from a household socket. The generators are incredibly popular on boats and caravans as a reliable and transportable source of energy; and there is no reason why harnessing renewable power shouldn’t be used in the home too.

It seems to me that hydropower is one of those renewable energies on the fringe of those energy sources considered green, i.e. having minimal impact on the environment. Humans have been harnessing water power in one form or another for centuries. But let’s face it our sheer numbers and technological advancements are crowding out nature with deleterious effects. Here in America, many hydropower projects are quite controversial, especially for people who love the outdoors and like to enjoy nature in its undisturbed form. I can certainly relate.

In my opinion, Iceland may be a unique case in this regard. With only 300,000 inhabitants in a country approximately the size of Kentucky, open wilderness is not a pressing issue. I know first hand. Once you leave the capital city of Reykjavik, there are few other cities of any notable size and lots of open spaces in between. In fact, the interior of Iceland is almost entirely uninhabited and probably never will be.

Iceland is a country blessed with a massive abundance of renewable energy, especially hydropower and geothermal. And, Icelanders have been utilizing hydropower for over a century now. Many of the countries hydroelectric plants are relatively small scale producing between 28 and 270 MW. Compare that with a massive plant like the Hoover dam power plant which produces over 2000 MW. But recently, a very controversial power plant was completed which sparked a lot of controversy and reignited the environmental debate in Iceland, especially hydropower. That project was the Karahnjukar hydroelectric power plant (690 MW), completed in 2007, which was built to supply electricity to the new Alcoa Fjaardal Aluminum Smelter in East Iceland. This plant was built in the highlands of Iceland and flooded a large area of pristine wilderness including a long, deep canyon.

Those opposed felt that the government was selling Iceland’s pristine nature to outside entities for little real economic gain for the masses. On the other side of the argument were those who were looking to monetize one of Iceland’s few natural resources to grow the economy in the face of dwindling fish stocks, once Iceland’s chief source of foreign currency. Let’s face it, every other country is doing so. Whether that natural resource is oil or natural gas or coal or timber or agricultural land. But Iceland has none of those assets.

Therein lies the dilemna. Can Iceland survive as a pristine toursist destination, thriving on tourism and the related service industries? Or should it capitalize on its abundant hydropower and geothermal power potential, selling energy to power intensive industries like aluminum smelters and the like? The answer may be somewhere in between. If handled properly, this tiny island nation could very well steer itself through the choppy waters of industrial growth in a way that few other countries have. And, in that sense may end up being a model for other nations. Time will tell. But there is evidence that the government of Iceland is trying to strike this balance with plans to develop hydrogen to fuel its cars, trucks and fishing boats and strict environmental regulations. I am not saying that Iceland is perfect and that they have all these issues handled. But, because this nation is a relative newcomer to industrialization, coupled with small population numbers and a remote location, they may be able to learn from the disastrous mistakes that other nations have made and come out in better shape.

As concerns about emissions and global warming increase, people are scrambling to make all of their regular activities more environmentally friendly. Travel has been singled out by many as one of the biggest contributors to the climate change problem. Fortunately, there are many ways to make travel greener. By keeping these Earth friendly means of travel in mind, you can take a trip and help the environment at the same time.

1. Walk

Perhaps the most environmentally friendly means of travel is walking. While walking between cities or across oceans is obviously impossible, any trip can be made greener by increasing the amount of time walking. Not only is walking good for the environment, it is a great way to get some fresh air and exercise. It will also put you in close contact with the place you are visiting, potentially increasing your enjoyment of the trip.

2. Ride a Bike

The only downside of walking is that it can be slow. Riding a bike is a faster, zero emission, alternative. Like walking, riding a bike is a great way to get some exercise and fresh air. Bikes can be purchased new or used and sometimes even found for free. If you are visiting a new city, it is worth finding a bike shop that has rentals available. A rented bike is the perfect vehicle for a tour of a new place.

3. Mass Transit

In some places the weather, terrain, or traffic congestion makes walking and riding a bike challenging. If walking or riding a bike is impractical, look for public transport. The city bus or subway is a great way to get around and the overall environmental impact is significantly less than that of driving or taking taxi cabs.

4. Take the Train

If you are traveling greater distances, see if a train is available. Trains are fast and comfortable and give off dramatically fewer emissions than airplanes or even buses. Many people argue that, since the train will be making the trip with or without you, the individual emissions responsibility is zero. Whether you agree with this or not, the train is a one of the most earth friendly means of travel around.

5. Take a Bus

If the train is not available, or is too expensive for your budget, taking the bus is a good alternative. While not as comfortable as flying or taking a train, the bus is reliable and more environmentally friendly than flying. With stations in most towns and the center of many cities, the bus is also often the most convenient option among all public transport.

6. Rent a Hybrid

If you need to drive, try renting a hybrid. Though slightly more expensive than standard car rentals, hybrids offer considerable fuel savings and decreased emissions. Once difficult to find, hybrids are now carried by most major rental agencies and are available from offices across the country.

7. Share a Ride

If you are going to be driving a large distance, consider sharing the ride with someone else. Ask friends and family when you are planning your trip if they know anyone with a similar itinerary. If this fails, visit your local church, library, or community center and see if they have a ride board. Similar services are also set up online. By sharing the trip with someone else, you effectively cut the potential emissions in half.

8. Offset Your Emissions

Whether you drive or fly, consider reducing your emissions by participating in an offset program. When you pay into one of these programs, your money is given to projects that work to reduce carbon emissions, global warming, and climate change. By giving an amount of money proportional to your expected travel emissions, you can make your trip “carbon neutral.”

9. Stay Still

Of course, not traveling at all is the only way to totally eliminate emissions, but many of us are not willing or are not able to give up or travel plans. Still, we can embrace this philosophy on our trips to reduce our overall impact. Instead of traveling to a place and then moving constantly to neighboring areas, try slowing down if possible. Go to one place and stay there. It may mean that you do not see the same number of different places, but each one you visit will be experienced to the fullest.

10. Stay Local

By not traveling as far from your home you can also make the trip more environmentally friendly. While it may not seem as exotic or exciting at first, there are likely neighboring areas that you have not visited, at least not as a tourist. This can be a fun and exciting way to see the area in which you live. Even if you travel far away, consider keeping things local once you get to your destination. Try to eat food that comes from nearby and buy sovereigns and products from that region.

Travel can have a huge impact on the climate and environment, but it does not have to. By keeping some of these tips in mind when making your travel plans you can make your trip much more earth friendly.

Having a wedding? Join the band of celebrities like Alicia Silverstone and Ashlee Simpson to recreate the perfect wedding, eco-friendly style! Here are some ways you can go green on your wedding day.

Eco-friendly invites: You can use recycled paper to print out invites. Make sure the paper hasn’t been through any bleaching process. Try using cotton or even hemp to create a unique invite. Soy based inks are good choices for printing purposes.

Your wedding dress: You could get a wedding gown made of organic silk, cotton, hemp etc. Try to avoid using materials manufactured out of acetate or polyester. These send out static electricity, consume a lot of energy and cause out-gassing as well.

Wedding ring material: Most people prefer gold as the metal of choice in their wedding ring. However, silver represents a better choice. A lot of unethical practices happen in gold mining. By not buying such rings you are showing your solidarity against such practices. Try to avoid using diamonds and use some other gemstone instead. However, if a diamond is a must make sure it is certified to ensure there are no blood-diamonds involved. You could also use a vintage, heirloom ring as you will be reusing it.

The wedding menu: Try using organic produce as much as possible when deciding the menu for your wedding day. Make sure no artificial flavors or sweeteners are being added. Use fair trade coffee varieties and use glassware which has been recycled. If you are having the wedding ceremony in a countryside setting getting organic produce can be tedious. So try getting produce from the local farms to have an au-naturale wedding!

Decorations: Avoid using floral foam. It is composed of phenol and formaldehyde which are poisonous to the environment. Use fresh flowers which are organically produced. Try not to use paraffin wax candles. Instead use beeswax or soy varieties as they are more eco-friendly. If these are too expensive for you then try opting for candles which are free of fragrances.

Wedding cake: You could try contacting an organic baker who specializes in creating organic wedding cakes. If you are the do-it-yourself type you could bake your own cake in the oven! Make sure you use only ingredients procured through fair trade means.

Wedding spot: The place chosen for your wedding can also make a difference to the environment. Try and encourage native suppliers to provide for your wedding. You could have a carpooling system to save on emissions. An antique and vintage touch could be added by traveling to the venue in a horse drawn carriage. Plus it saves on carbon dioxide emissions!

Your honeymoon: Try to select an eco-friendly spa or resort as your honeymoon venue. If you are on a tight budget then you could even travel to a locale near your house!

Every body is going eco-friendly these days. We all have a duty and responsibility towards the maintenance of our environment and we can begin by employing eco-friendly fixtures in our homes. Besides helping the environment, these eco-friendly procedures also help to lower down you gas or electricity bills! Now, isn’t that amazing?

Firstly, consider installing solar panels. Although solar heating has been used to warm homes for thousands of years, solar panels are totally modern and very green. When buying them, consider the used ones as they are not only cheap, but also produce the same amount of power when they were brand new.

Think about solar power whenever possible. This can save you a lot of money in the long run. For example, if you are replacing your water heater, consider a solar powered model. This will reduce energy usage, lower your power bill, and ensure that you always have plenty of hot water on hand, even if the power is out in the rest of the house.

Going low-tech is one way to save huge amounts of energy. Try to incorporate things close to nature in your home. For example, you can try to add vents in the gable wall of your kitchen. Every day hot air will rise out of the vents for free. The kitchen stays cooler, the air fresher and the refrigerator doesn’t work as hard. You will be enjoying your outdoor kitchen that will keep most of the heat outside.

The bedroom should also have the “green element” as well. You would be surprised to know that many off-the -shelf bedding products are treated with a harsh chemical known as formaldehyde, which I very hazardous to your health as well as the environment. So, opt for organic bedding to avoid the dangers to your health.

Well, the above home improvement tips will certainly help you to have a “green home”. An eco-friendly home is the first step towards a healthy environment!

One of the main concerns of any person is the quality of the water that enters his or her body. This is probably the most justified concern anyone can have, because without water we would die. At the same time, water is the main carrier for many bacteria and viruses that can lead to diseases, because of the high degree of pollution that takes place around the world.

In this direction there have been many developments that purify the water we drink. Filters are the best known product of this sort that is available on the market today. They can be found in most homes today, to cleanse the water there, but what if you were to go out on a trip or store some water or other beverages for various other purposes?

The most popular storage object used today is the bottle. Bottles are used to store every liquid, be it water, juice, alcohol or who knows what else. Since the surrounding environment has become a great problem for us, some manufacturers have developed eco-friendly water bottles.

Aquasana is a leader on the water filtration market. This company has won numerous awards for their activities in this direction and it is now rated number one in America. Apart from their filtration options, this company is now offering a choice for eco-friendly water bottles, a new development that will surely keep your water stored in the refrigerator without the worry of unwanted microorganisms.

Switzerland is well known for the high quality of the products they deliver. SIGG, a Swiss company, has combined their craftsmanship and quality with contemporary and innovative style to bring us a wide selection of eco-friendly water bottles.

Klean Kanteen is a company that has made an impression on the market of eco-friendly water bottles, targeting more active users. There is a wide selection of these types of bottles that can be used by bikers or hikers alike, manufactured from stainless steel with a surface that keeps the unwanted microorganisms out.

Other storage options for home use are the eco-friendly water jugs. While bottles are good for transportation of the liquids inside them, jugs are designed to be kept in a refrigerator, with little worry of spilling or of any unwanted presence.

A renowned company that produces eco-friendly water jugs is Frigoverre. This company produces lots of sturdy designs that flirt with the new and innovative styles of today. You are bound to find the model that suits you best in their collection, no matter how pretentious you are.

Even though you might think that a bottle can store liquids better than a jug, do not be fooled. Eco-friendly water jugs from Frigoverre will keep any odor or bacteria out due to the tight fitting lids. And if you are worried about the washing process, they are dish-washer safe.

If you do not know where to find eco-friendly water jugs from Frigoverre, the best place to start would be the Internet. Instead of starting an endless search that can provide great prices on their products, you should take the time to visit the website www.thewaterkey.com.

Every April there’s one day when we all try to come together for a greater good. No, it’s not Tax Day ; it’s Earth Day on April 22nd. While most people know about Earth Day and its environmental significance, few of us know how Earth Day got started!

In the late 1960′s and early 1970′s, there was growing concern over the state of the environment. Most notably seen across college campuses and grassroots organizations, this environmental focus also grew in importance within the political sphere. In 1969, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson suggested a demonstration to help gain attention for environmental causes. A year later on April 22nd, the first official Earth Day was held with over 20 million people participating , a giant step for the modern environmental movement!

Since the inception of Earth Day, the holiday has become an international effort to improve environmental sustainability from air quality and global warming to wildlife protection and recycling efforts. In 1992, the United Nations recognized the growing need to maintain environmental health with an Earth Summit in Rio de Jainero.

While Earth Day has changed a great deal from its original demonstration-based format, the goal remains the same. Now, there’s a greater emphasis on clean energy and the reduction of global warming, but one fact is undeniable: Earth Day is growing in importance across the world. Nearly a billion people across the world participated in last year’s Earth Day activities.

In addition to focusing on a very real and pressing issue, Earth Day also brings people of different cultures, nationalities, religions, and races together to strive for a common goal. Celebrated in over 175 countries, Earth Day is considered “the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a half billion people every year,” according to Earth Day Network. This year, become a part of this exciting and important holiday , and spread the word to your friends and family!

What You Can Do:

There are tons of ways you can celebrate Earth Day by yourself or with friends and family! Some of the things you can do to help the environment are:

*Plant a tree: Help keep the planet green one tree at a time! Trees help absorb carbon dioxide, thereby reducing your carbon footprint. For more information on planting, tree care, and what trees are best for your area and the environment, please visit the Arbor Day Foundation (http://www.arborday.org/).

*Make your home Earth friendly: While so many environmental efforts focus on the outdoors, there are an endless number of ways you can make your home more “green.” From compact florescent light bulbs and Energystar appliances (http://www.energystar.gov/) to organic, locally grown foods and natural pest control (http://www.ecosmart.com/), there are a growing number of products to help you keep your home Earth friendly. Visit www.healthychild.org for simple ways to keep your home healthy for your family and the planet.

*Donate to a worthy environmental cause: You don’t have to get down and dirty if you don’t want to; donations to well respected environmental organizations ensure that you’re helping the causes you find important. And don’t forget , sometimes these groups need the items you just have gathering dust in your garage! Visit www.charitynavigator.org or similar sites to find a reputable organization.

*Walk, bike, or carpool to reduce emissions: Sometimes, it’s the changes you make in your daily life that will have the greatest impact on the environment. Do something good for your health and the planet by walking or biking to work or to run errands. If you live too far away, consider carpooling or taking public transportation.

*Start a recycling program in your community: If your community doesn’t already have the resources for recycling, you can always take your items to a recycling center. However, if you make the extra effort to create a convenient recycling solution within your neighborhood, more people are likely to recycle as well. At http://earth911.org/recycling/ you can find what items can be recycled as well as how and where to recycle them.

*Know your carbon footprint: How do you measure up in terms of the amount of Carbon Dioxide you and your family produce? See where you stand compared to the national average by calculating your personal contribution to global warming at www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/. You might be surprised enough to adopt cleaner forms of energy.

Most travelers unknowingly add to the rising amount of junk in our landfills on our green Earth. Here are some simple, green tips that can help you travel without ruining the Earth. Here are some informative ones that can educate you on traveling in the most eco-friendly fashion.

1. Before you head out on your next trip-

Make sure that all appliances at home are switched off and unplugged. Some of the appliances are called ‘energy vampires’ because of their ability to **** energy even when not in use.

2. Reduce fuel consumption and gas emissions-

Take public transportation instead of driving. It’s also great if you can avoid flying because airplanes add significantly more carbon dioxide than buses and trains. If you’re going in a group, try to fit as many people into each vehicle. Carpooling is a splendid idea for travel.

3. Carry reusable items-

So you don’t have to buy new ones continuously. Carrying water bottles, especially in places where you get free drinking water is a good option. Plastic water bottles can take up to 1,000 years to break down, so cut down on your plastic bottles and save the environment.

4. Pick out accommodations that follow a go green policy-

Many tourism spots are eco-friendly and promote environmental preservation. We need to encourage such endeavors and give them a boost in business. Just be cautious that they aren’t making false environmental claims known as Greenwashing.

5. Enjoy your vacation but consider your use of facilities-

Keep appliances switched off while not in use. Reduce takeout food as much as you can, so you don’t add to more plastic and paper disposals. Use water sparingly by taking simple steps like not having your linens washed every day.

Following these simple rules can make travel easy on you and the Earth. Happy Vacationing!

As the old saying goes, “for 200 years we’ve been conquering Nature. Now we’re beating it to death”. Everyone needs to jump on the Eco-friendly band wagon these days. There are lot of options for being eco-friendly from using solar power and recyclable material to building eco-friendly housing. Log homes are the best choice available for building eco friendly homes today. From planning and construction to living in the Eco friendly wood homes, every activity has little or no negative impact on the environment. Though the Eco friendly wood homes are offered by various companies, not all of them are equal. You should know some factors about the Eco friendly wood homes before choosing the one for you.

Eco friendly wood homes made from Northern White Cedar are better than others

Eco friendly wood homes are made of different types of wood. Most of the eco friendly wood homes are made using the “Dry Dead Standing trees”. As the name indicates, this type of wood used in constructing the log homes will be of very poor quality. Though many log home manufacturers claim using the “Dry Dead Standing trees” as the cheapest and best option, this is simply untrue. The true fact is that though the log homes made from “Dry Dead Standing trees” needs low initial investments, the maintenance cost of these log homes will be very high. Getting log home constructed using the “Dry Dead Standing trees” will end up in a lifetime of repairs and maintenance.

When it comes to the best wood for constructing the log homes, the Northern White Cedar are the ones to look for. There are countless numbers of benefits in using Northern White Cedar in the construction of the log homes. One of the main advantages of this type of wood is it’s unsurpassed durability. The Northern White Cedar can retain its good appearance and toughness for more than 100 years. The maintenance cost of the log homes constructed with Northern White Cedar will be much less when compared to the other types of log homes.

Northern White Cedar log homes are better than White Pine Log Homes

White pine is also widely used in the construction of log homes. Though white pine log homes are better than the ones constructed from “Dry Dead Standing trees”, they too have some drawbacks. White pine logs do not have the capacity to resist insects and rot. This means the log homes made from white pine needs some special treatment to prevent insects entering the house. You don’t have to worry about insects and rot if you are living in a log home constructed with Northern White Cedar. Researches revealed that Northern White Cedar is imbued with natural resins that repel insects and resist rot and degredation.

Considering all these benefits, the Northern White Cedar log-homes are the best eco-friendly homes available in this planet.
